The December 5 SAT: A 5-Week Plan for Gainesville and Northern Virginia Families

Updated: Oct 26

For a lot of seniors, the December 5 SAT is the last real shot at a higher score before college deadlines. For juniors, it's a smart early first try. Either way, five weeks is enough time to make a real difference if the time is used well.

Key dates to put on the fridge

December 5 SAT key dates: Nov 20, Nov 24, Dec 5, Dec 18
  • Friday, November 20: regular registration deadline for December 5, and November scores come out the same day.

  • Tuesday, November 24: late registration and change deadline for December 5.

  • Saturday, December 5: test day.

  • Friday, December 18: December scores released.

Always confirm on the College Board dates page.

Why winter-break crash courses are too late for this test

Many Northern Virginia programs run their big SAT intensives over winter break, after December 5 is over. If December is your student's target, the plan needs to start now.

The 5-week plan

5-week Digital SAT plan timeline, Oct 26 to Dec 4

Week 1 · Oct 26 to Nov 1: Find the starting line. Take a full Bluebook practice test under real timing. Sort every wrong answer: was it a reading slip, a math mistake, not understanding the question, a trap answer, or carelessness?

Week 2 · Nov 2 to 8: Fix the biggest pattern. Most points come back from one or two repeat mistakes, not from learning everything. Work on the top pattern and the math skills behind it (linear equations, systems, functions).

Week 3 · Nov 9 to 15: Module 1 accuracy. The Digital SAT adapts after the first module, so strong Module 1 accuracy opens the harder, higher-scoring second module. Practice careful, steady pacing.

Week 4 · Nov 16 to 22: Desmos and hard questions. Learn when the built-in Desmos calculator saves time (graphing systems, finding intersections, checking answers) and practice the toughest question types. Register by November 20 if you haven't.

Week 5 · Nov 23 to Dec 4: Second full test and taper. Take another full Bluebook test early in the week, review it, then go lighter. Sleep and confidence matter on test day.
