Test-taking strategies for the Algebra 1 SOL
Get to know the calculator. The online Algebra 1 test has a graphing calculator built in. Practice with it before test day so you can graph an equation and check an answer quickly.
Read what the question asks for. Is it the vertex or the axis of symmetry? A solution or a y-intercept? Find the key words before you look at the choices.
Eliminate choices that can't be right. Cross out answers with the wrong sign or the wrong kind of answer. Then compare the choices that are left.
Flag it and come back. Stuck on a question? Flag it for review and keep going. Return to your flagged questions before you submit.
Check your work. Plug your answer back into the equation or graph it on the calculator. Make sure it makes sense in the problem.
Pace yourself. The SOL test has no time limit so there is no need to rush. Read every choice before you pick one.
